BACOLOD City – An official of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Negros Island Region believes the policy of Secretary Emmanuel Piñol of not accepting gifts from private companies is worth emulating.
All DA employees were directed not to accept gifts in any form to maintain objectivity, Regional Director Joyce Wendam said.
They should refuse gifts, especially those from private companies involved in initiatives that require supervision from the DA, she said.
Piñol returned the Rolex Submariner watch amounting P450,000 given to him during a dinner with top officials of a giant agricultural company last year.
In a Facebook post, Piñol said he decided to “respectfully” give the watch back to the sender for fear of facing corruption charges and imprisonment for conflict of interest by receiving expensive gifts.
“This worth-emulating act of the secretary is a manifestation that he is really true to his words of ending corruption in the department,” Wendam said.
“This should also be replicated in the agency’s regional level,” she added.
According to Wendam, the law prohibits government officials and employees from accepting expensive gifts.
It is a violation of civil service rules and regulations, she said. (PNA)
