BACOLOD City – Retirement benefits may soon be granted to qualified barangay health workers (BHWs) and barangay nutrition scholars (BNSs) in the city.
Councilor Em Ang authored a proposed ordinance granting gratuitous retirement benefits to accredited BHWs and BNSs in Bacolod.
A public hearing on the proposal was conducted on March 2 at the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) session hall.
Village chiefs, BHWs, BNSs, and representatives from the City Health Office, City Legal Office, City Budget Office, and City Accountant’s Office, among others, attended the hearing.
Under Ang’s proposal, the computation of the retirement benefits will depend on the length of service of the BHWs and BNSs, such as:
* 10 to 20 years in service – P1,000 yearly
* 21 to 30 years in service – 1,250 yearly
* 31 years and above – P1,500 yearly
Ang said another public hearing will not be held. She added that she was currently making a committee report to be submitted to the SP for deliberation.
BHWs and BNSs are on the frontlines of providing social services in the city, Ang stressed. They are exposed to risks associated with the maintenance and promotion of public health, she added.
“In order for BHWs and BNSs to sufficiently render services without them worrying for their safety and with the benefit of protection after stepping down to the realm of public service, there is therefore a need to provide an additional benefit to these workers such as the retirement assistance,” Ang said./PN
