MANILA – The De La Salle University Green Archers aims to move closer to a UAAP Season 79 men’s seniors basketball elimination sweep when it faces archrival Ateneo Blue Eagles today at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The second round of the Green Archers-Blue Eagles square off is slated at 4 p.m. following the matchup between the University of the East Red Warriors and the Nartional University Bulldogs at 12 noon.
Green Archers head coach Aldin Ayo, however, said he’s urging his boys to focus on improving their game rather than a possible elimination round sweep or the matchup against the Blue Eagles.
“It is just an ordinary game for us,” said Ayo. “May mga aspects pa sa plays na kailangan namin trabahuin. Good thing, we’re playing as a team and sharing the basketball.”
“Pero umaangat na yung level ng laro namin,” added Ayo, who will be in attendance for his first-ever DLSU-Ateneo match after serving a suspension in their first encounter, which the Green Archers won, 97-81.
For Blue Eagles head coach Sandy Arespacochaga, their matchup against the Green Archers will help his squad to blend more ahead of the playoff round slated later this month.
“We’re just happy that we’re maturing, but at the same time we also want to emphasize that we still have a lot of room for improvement,” said Arespacochaga, who was listed as the Blue Eagles head coach since Tab Baldwin is ineligible for the spot.
“We want to be critical of ourselves to make sure that we keep on improving, especially in our weak areas,” he added. “We don’t know who will step up next game, but as long as we keep on improving as a team, we’re very happy.”
Leading the way for the Green Archers are Cameroonian import Benoit Mbala, Jeron Teng, Ricci Rivero, Aljun Melecio and Abu Tratter, while bannering the Blue Eagles are Ferdinand “Thirdy” Ravena III, Aaron Black, Jolo Mendoza, Chibueze Ikeh, and Isaac Go./PN
