BACOLOD City – President Rodrigo Duterte failed to deliver the change he promised, a group of laborers claimed on the eve of the national holiday commemorating the birth of revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio.
The Negros chapter of the Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP) also called on the public to join the various protests planned for Nov. 30.
“It’s been six months since Duterte won the presidency by riding on the wave of the people’s anger at the previous administration and their yearning for real change,” BMP president Leody de Guzman said in a press release.
But the people “still cannot see even just a shadow of change looming in the horizon,” said de Guzman.
“So many laws and policies that are anti-worker and anti-Filipino — such as Articles 106 to 109 of the Labor Code [and] the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, among many others — are still firmly locked in place,” he said.
Revising or repealing these laws and agreements “would go a long way in freeing the Filipino from penury,” said de Guzman.
“Yet the President has chosen to prioritize pushing for anti-poor and anti-worker measures such as reimposing the death penalty, removing remaining restrictions on foreign investments, and waging a ‘war on drugs’ that has killed so many people from the ranks of the working masses,” he said.
The BMP also joined other militant groups in criticizing Duterte for allowing the deposed dictator Ferdinand Marcos to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
“For real change to happen, the [BMP] urges the public to take action and use their power to achieve significant social transformations,” said de Guzman./PN
