MANILA – The Malacañang on Sunday defended President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte’s “lobby money talks” comment following the decision of the Commission on Appointments (CA) to reject Gina Lopez as Environment chief.
“PRRD’s statement that there was lobby money highlights the existence of certain vested interests in the appointment of officials,” presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.
Lopez claimed that those who vote against her were influenced by business interests.
A total of 16 CA members voted “No” for Lopez, while only eight voted to confirm the former Department of Environment and Natural Resources secretary.
Abella said that Duterte’s remark, which he made a day after the May 3 CA vote, does not undermine the integrity of the Commission on Appointments.
“Some members of the Commission have decided according to principle and conscience and even came out to explain their votes,” said the spokesperson.
Abella stressed that Duterte respects the duty of the CA to confirm or reject certain appointments.
“The fact that he did not interfere during the confirmation process of the erstwhile DENR Secretary shows his deference to the body,” he added./PN
