MANILA – Sen. Koko Pimentel on Monday urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) to improve its recruitment and promotion standards.
They should not only focus on getting rid of corrupt and undisciplined police, but also preventing them from causing damage to the institution, according to the senate president.
“Allowing rogue cops to stay in the service mocks the efforts of honest police officers who put their lives on the line to rid our country of illegal drugs,” Pimentel said.
PNP chief director general Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa earlier ordered to suspend the government’s anti-illegal drugs operation to focus on internal cleansing.
Dela Rosa’s statement came after the abduction and murder of Korean businessman Jee Ick-joo, whose perpetrators were allegedly members of a police anti-drug unit.
“This is nothing more than a pause to regroup. I expect the PNP to come back stronger than ever after this cleansing.”
Pimentel, meanwhile, opposed the reassignment of erring policemen to Mindanao as punishment.
Cases, the lawmaker from Cagayan de Oro said, should be filed against them.
“Bad cops should not be sent to Mindanao, they should be sent to jail,” he concluded./PN
