THESE past 12 months, there is no doubt that the Philippine National Police (PNP) has accomplished a lot in its war against illegal drugs. But corrupt members of the police service have taken advantage of the government’s anti-drug campaign to conduct shakedowns, extortion, kidnapping and other criminal activities. They are using the element of fear that comes with the PNP’s Oplan: Tokhang to extract money from civilians, including those who are not really involved in drug trafficking.
Now that the campaign against illegal drugs has been given solely to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, the PNP can focus on its crackdown against the scalawags and misfits in its ranks. It should be a top-to-bottom clean-up and it doesn’t matter if the only ones left are the rookies.
We believe the PNP’s Director General Ronald Dela Rosa understands the breadth and depth of the corruption in the police organization and knows that if he wants to move forward and with greater moral ascendancy, he has to cleanse the ranks of the national police and remove all corrupt and abusive policemen regardless of their rank. This is the first step in protecting our people and keeping everyone safe.
Dela Rosa should demonstrate that he means business in his fight against rogue policemen to restore the people’s trust in the PNP. The campaign against corrupt and abusive cops will resonate well with our people because it will show everyone that government is sincere to serve.
The PNP’s problem on corruption is deeply rooted. Now, its leadership can give its undivided attention to this challenge. After all, the President has time and again declared his resolve to win not just the war against illegal drugs but also the war against corruption and criminality.
