MANILA – Petron Sprint 4T tandem Cherry Rondina and Bernadeth Pons emerged as the champion in the 2017 Belo-Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup on Sunday night at the SM By the Bay, Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Rondina and Negros Occidental-native Pons capped off its perfect campaign in the event when they demolished Ilongga Fiola Ceballos and Bacolodnon Patty Orendain of Generika-Ayala A, 21-12, 21-8, in the one-game championship match.

Dubbed as two of the best players on the sand today, Rondina and Pons were impressive from start to finish en route to winning the title of the prestigious beach volleyball tourney.

Rondina, who lost to Guimaras-native Gonzaga in a dramatic final battle last year, said her victory is sweet as it comes on the heels of winning the crown for the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses in the UAAP beach volleyball tournament.

“All of the country’s best beach volleyball players are here, so this win is something I should be proud of,” said the Campostela, Cebu-native Rondina. “It was a difficult battle. But in the end, everything is worth it.”

The Petron XCS pair of Shiela Pineda and Frances Molina, meanwhile, bagged the third place trophy after scoring a 10-21, 21-14, 15-9 victory over Sta Lucia’s Danika Gendrauli and Ilongga Jackie Estoquia.

Gonzaga and Maica Morada of Cignal HD A salvaged a fifth place finish following a 21-15, 26-28, 15-11 win over Mylene Paat and Janine Marciano of Cignal B, while Marijo Medalla and Bianca Tripoli of Perpetual placed seventh by beating Wensh Tiu and Abie Naval of Cocolife, 21-13, 21-19.

Also emerging with a crown on their heads are Anthony Arbastro and Calvin Sarte of Generika-Ayala, who clobbered EJ Ramos and Edmar Bonono of Cignal HD, 21-17, 21-18, in the finals of the men’s division.

Mike Abria and Edwin Tolentino of SM By the Bay, for its part, settled for 3rd place following a 21-19, 23-21 win over Rey and Relan Taneo of Perpetual Help in the classification round./PN
