MANILA – Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and Blackwater Elite will fight for their lives when they face off in a knockout game tonight at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum for the remaining quarterfinals slot in the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup.

The winner in the do-or-die game at 7 p.m. will face defending champion and top seed San Miguel Beermen, which is armed with a twice-to-beat advantage.

In their lone elimination-round encounter on Dec. 9, 2016, the Painters scored a 107-93 victory over the Elite with Negrense James Yap leading the way with 15 markers.

But the Painters struggled heavily since, dropping its last four matches to start the year to slide down for a joint eighth place at the end of the elimination.

The same goes with the Elite, which lost four of its five matches in 2017. But it has shown tremendous improvement, scoring wins over playoff bound teams GlobalPort Batang Pier and Alaska Aces.

Aside from Yap, leading the Carlos Garcia-mentored Painters were Jericho Cruz, Beau Belga, Jeffrei Chan, Maverick Ahanmisi, Celedonio Trollano, and Chris Tolomia.

Mac Belo, Arthur Dela Cruz, Raymond Aguilar, Ronjay Buenafe, Nard John Pinto, Kyle Pascual, and Riego Gamalinda composed the Elite under head coach Leo Isaac.

Other playoff pairings featured Star Hotshots versus Phoenix Fuel Masters and TNT Katropa versus Batang Pier. The Aces, meanwhile, will face Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, with the Aces holding a twice-to-beat edge./PN
