MANILA – After two loses, San Miguel returned to the victory lane after defeating Rain or Shine 103-96 in the Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup.

Chris Ross scored conference-high 27 points – including five 3-point conversions – to help Beermen improve its win-loss slate to 5-3 in the Wednesday night game at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Marcio Lassiter added 22 while Arwind Santos and June Mar Fajardo contributed 18 and 17, respectively. Beermen went all-Filipino for the most part, with outgoing import Terik Bridgeman being ineffective.

Import J’Nathan Bullock top-scored with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists, while Maverick Ahanmisi added 12 markers for Rain or Shine, whose three-game winning run was halted and record dropped to 5-3.

San Miguel waxed hot early on the offensive end on inside hits by Fajardo and outside conversions by Ross and Lassiter to build a 32-23 edge before widening this to 55-39 at the half.

In the third quarter, Elasto Painters went on a strong surge behind Bullock to come to as close as 3 points on hits by Eduardo Daquioag, but Beermen responded with back-to-back hits from Ross for a 75-70 lead heading into the fourth.

Beermen made a huge run in the final quarter on hits by Santos to raise the lead to 86-72. Rain or Shine had its last stand and came to within 84-90 on a triple by Gabe Norwood.

San Miguel then turned to the Filipino-American guard Ross, who answered with a triple to make it a 9-point game anew and scored three straight layups to seal the win for Beermen.

“We really needed this win. The players knew the importance of this game,” said Beermen head coach Leo Austria. “I’m happy for the players na nakita nila iyong energy. Even our bench players stepped up.”/PN
