Roster spot in college team for sale?

IF THERE are coaches or assistant coaches into “monkey business” like game fixing or scalping tickets, there are also collegiate coaches selling roster spots on their teams.

A source told the Buzzer Beater that while a collegiate coach has his “protected 12” on his team or those players who are part of his rotation, he allocates four more roster spots for other players who can pay him a certain amount.

Even with a depleted lineup, Cignal HD Spikers vowed to go all out in a bid to defend its title in the Philippine Superliga Invitational Conference which started on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

HD Spikers head coach Edgar Barroga said his team is still positive as the absence of Jovelyn Gonzaga, Honey Royse Tubino and Janine Marciano inspires them to work hard to defend the title they won last year.

Gonzaga and Marciano remained out for the rest of the conference due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury while Tubino moved back to the Philippine Army, which will carry the colors of Smart.

“To be honest, defending the title is never easy,” said Barroga. “But I can see the players’ willingness and determination. They treat this situation more as a challenge rather than an obstacle.”

“We may not be as star-studded as last year, but we’re making up for it by working hard,” added Barroga who will be relying on Rachel Anne Daquis, Mylene Paat, Janine Navarro, Rialen Sante, Cherry Vivas, Shirley Salamagos, Acy Masangkay, and Jheck Dionela.

Barroga also said that, from his lineup, he is counting on Daquis who is displaying her vintage form in their past few trainings.

“We’re devising some plays, especially for Rachel,” said. “We know she’s been hampered with injuries the past couple of conferences. We want to bring back her confidence. We want her to lead us back to the title. She is our leader.”/PN
