ROXAS City – A new decibel meter has been acquired by the Roxas City Government as part of the local government unit’s efforts to strengthen the implementation of noise regulations.
A decibel meter is a device used to measure the intensity of sound.
The device will be handed over to the Traffic Management Unit and the City Ordinance Regulatory Enforcement team so that they will be able to quickly and accurately determine whether noise levels exceed the legal limit of 99 decibels.
“We need to properly train our enforcers so that they know what it is they are enforcing,” said Councilor Fernando Luiz Viterbo, adding that complaints continue to pour in from residents regarding excessive noise, particularly from motorcycles with open mufflers and other sources.
Viterbo, the chairman of the City Council committee on police, fire and peace and order, said the technology will serve as a reliable basis for issuing warnings and citation tickets to violators of the city’s noise regulations.
Recently, Mayor Ronnie Dadivas has ordered the strict enforcement of the city’s ordinance against open mufflers on motorcycles to reduce excessive and unnecessary noise — particularly during nighttime.
The mayor has also directed the TMU to intensify monitoring and apprehension of violators and also reminded motorcycle repair shops to refrain from replacing standard mufflers with modified or open-type ones. (PIA)/PN
