CAPIZ — In a proactive move to ensure the safety of students and school personnel, Roxas City has suspended all face-to-face classes for students at all levels, both public and private schools today, November 25, due to the approach of Tropical Depression “Verbena.”
The decision prioritizes the well-being of students amid forecasts of hazardous weather conditions. As of the latest report, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the center of Tropical Depression “Verbena” was located approximately 330 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.
The storm is currently generating maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (km/h), with gusts reaching up to 55 km/h, and has a central pressure of 1002 hPa. Forecasters warn of heavy rainfall, particularly in coastal and low-lying areas, raising concerns over potential flooding and landslides.
In preparation for the worsening weather, Roxas City officials have also declared an early dismissal on November 24. All classes across educational institutions ended at 12 p.m., allowing students ample time to return home safely before the storm intensifies.
Currently, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is in effect for several areas, including Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, Antique (including the Caluya Islands), and Guimaras. This signal indicates expected wind speeds of 39 to 61 km/h (Beaufort Scale 6 to 7). While the immediate threats are minimal to minor, residents are urged to remain vigilant as conditions develop.
Local authorities and disaster response teams are on high alert, with emergency services prepared to respond to any weather-related incidents. Parents and guardians are advised to stay informed by monitoring local news channels and PAGASA updates, prepare emergency kits with essential supplies such as food, water, flashlights, batteries, and first aid items, secure outdoor furniture and fixtures that could become projectiles during strong winds, and avoid flood- or landslide-prone areas while refraining from unnecessary travel.
Parents are also encouraged to maintain communication with the schools for specific guidance and instructions.
