Roxas City’s ‘odd-even’ traffic plan suspended

ROXAS City – The city government suspended the “odd-even” traffic intervention scheme in this capital city after it faced negative feedback.

Councilor Julius Abela on Friday stopped the dry run of the tricycle coding experiment, which aims to decongest traffic in Roxas.

Under the proposed scheme, tricycles were divided into two groups. Those with city numbers ending with an odd number are separated from those ending with an even number.

They are then assigned days when they can ply the city.

This resulted to a low turnout of tricycles plying Roxas for a day, the same reason that some commuters and transport groups members got irked.

“What a brilliant idea! This will add more inconvenience to us public commuters. Salig sila kay may ara sila kaugalingon nga mga salakyan, pero kami iya nagahulat lawig kag naga-bulad sa initan,” resident Mie Ann Garcia wrote on Facebook.

Another resident, Gail Barabasa, told Panay News, “It took us almost 20 minutes of waiting before taking a ride. Kon ginlakat namon kaabot na kami sa amon kadtuan.”

Traffic Management Unit (TMU) head Junie June Hervias confirmed the cancellation of the proposed traffic plan.

He added that since the TMU recommended the scheme, it was proper for him to ask the city government to cancel it after the feedbacks.

The dry run of the traffic plan was supposed to last for two weeks, starting May 15. But it ended three days later.

Councilor Powell del Rosario has expressed opposition on the traffic proposal.

Del Rosario said, “This resolution does not reflect what happens during the session. The date of the dry run was not mentioned during the session and the details of the schemes were not explained.”

He was referring to Resolution No. 44 dated May 8, which seeks to authorize the TMU to hold a dry run of the “odd-eve” scheme.

Kay padasudasu gid ipapasarmaski wala matun’an! Kundi karamaal naman. Wala natun- an, wala naconsulta sa tawo, wala mameetingan, pero gin duso sa konseho kag gin pa abprobahan ora mismo…ang resulta? Pumuluyo ang gin perwisyo! Stop Odd/Even Scheme Now! (sic),” del Rosario wrote on his Facebook account on May 17./PN
