MANILA – Ilonggo fighter Ruel Catalan failed to sustain his strong start and bowed to Marcio Cesar of Brazil in the Reign in Power Fighting Championship in Taipei, Taiwan.

Catalan started the Saturday night bout by decking Cesar with a ground and pound but the Brazilian turned things around with a kimura in the next round, forcing the Filipino to tap out.

Despite this, Catalan Fighting System Philippines coach Rene Catalan described the event as “a good fight” for Catalan. Facing off with a veteran MMA fighter like Cesar gives Catalan a “really good experience,” he said.

The 29-year-old Iloilo City native dropped to a 2-8-0 record (he lost his last three matches) while Cesar improved to 20-10-3.

Another MMA fighter under the stable of the Catalan Fighting System Philippines, Glen Ranillo, suffered a unanimous-decision defeat at the hands of the debuting Emmanuel Binyet of Switzerland.

Ranillo did not show any ring rust despite being inactive for four years but Binyet still turned out as the more aggressive and faster fighter.

The 34-year-old Filipino’s record slid to 4-4-0 as Binyet, who was based in Taiwan, claimed his first MMA victory./PN
