MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings guard LA Tenorio made sure he will have a smile on his face when he went under the knife yesterday for his recurring right elbow injury.
The injury had been bothering him for five years now, and Tenorio has recently found the right time to have it operated, with the next season of the PBA not opening until mid-December.
“It (injury) started when I was at Alaska (Aces) pero medyo nawawala-wala siya, and then iyon, nag-develop na ng spur, kasi ’pag tumatanda na talagang ganoon,” said the former Gilas Pilipinas guard.
“I think it’s a good time na rin kasi matagal pa iyong next season,” he added. “Adrenaline na lang talaga ang nagdadala every game. Although I have painkillers, after noong game, saka ko nararamdaman.”
Tenorio was instrumental in Kings’ 101-96 win over Meralco Bolts in Game 7 of the PBA Governors’ Cup best-of-seven finals on Friday night at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
The former Ateneo Blue Eagles guard unloaded series-high 26 points – including five three-point conversions – to go along with four assists, one rebound and one steal in 42 minutes of play.
In the championship series, the 33-year-old Tenorio has been averaging 13.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.3 steals, enough for him to capture his third PBA Finals MVP plaque.
The 5-foot-8 guard also became the fifth PBA player to win at least three Finals MVP citations. Others were James Yap, Danny Seigle, Eric Menk, and Danny Ildefonso.
“Nakita ko iyong teammates ko nagsasakripisyo rin, nakita ko iyong mga fans din nagsasakripisyo, hindi ko na naiisip iyong sakit,” said Tenorio. “Tulad ng sabi ko, after Game 7 na lang kami magpapahinga.”/PN
