BACOLOD City – The Negros Occidental provincial government got rid of decrepit playground facilities at the Capitol Park and Lagoon.
It wants to avoid the accident that killed a 10-year-old girl in Himamaylan City last week, the chief security officer said.
“Ang mga dilapidated swings and slides nga indi na safe sa kabataan ginpahimos na naton,” said Venchito Magalona.
A security guard will now be detailed at the Park to ensure the children’s safety.
“Maunay ang gwardya sa park para magsaway sa mga bata nga gahampang nga inang daw indi na proper,” said Magalona.
Magalona appealed to parents to help avoid accidents by carefully attending to their children while at playgrounds.
“Kon gahampang ang mga kabataan, i-guide gid para indi madisgrasya,” he said.
Steel bars of a slide and swing fell on Chrissia Mae Lepaña of Barangay II Poblacion, Himamaylan City on Nov. 18.
Lepaña was with her brother and other playmates when the accident happened around 6 p.m.
The steel bars were already old, Inspector Raymundo Franco, deputy chief of Himamaylan City police station, said in a report.
Himamaylan City councilor Justin Gatuslao sought an investigation.
The office in charge of managing the city plaza and maintaining the playground must be held to account, Gatuslao wrote City Administrator Sofia Encarnacion on Nov. 20.
He also asked if there was an “assessment made on the integrity and soundness of the structures at the playground this year.”
Gatuslao will deliver a privileged speech during the Himamaylan city council session today to call for an independent inquiry.
He also plans to push for a comprehensive policy on safety and security in Himamaylan City’s public realm./PN
