SAGAY North Negros clinched the 2nd Sagay Men’s Open Championship crown after a 2-0 victory over Ceres-University of St. La Salle in the finals at Sagay National High School in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

Jimuel Ariola and Clifford Tecson converted a goal each for Sagay North, which avenged its 0-2 defeat to the dethroned champion Ceres-USLS during the elimination round.

After settling for a scoreless first half on Wednesday, Sagay North led 1-0 when Ariola scored over the defense of Ceres-USLS goalkeeper John Mark Jamelo. Ceres-USLS’ Jo Warren Bedia nearly tied the match but Leoben Wayco deflected his shot.

Sagay North widened the lead midway in the second half on a conversion by Tecson before tightening its defense to frustrate Ceres-USLS, which struggled in its last three matches.

Ariola was named Most Valuable Player and Best Striker, while his teammates Wayco, Lemuel Unabia and Arnel Marcellana were the Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender and Best Midfielder, respectively.

Also part of the Sagay North Negros team were playing coach Alfe Sebuha, Daniel Ramos III, Jasper Aguado, Jerald Paparon, Jonel Selibio, Rey Oreta, Florence Agraviador, Jesthony Sebuha, Kent dela Cruz, Noel Madraga Jr., Patrick Guilaran, John Celiz, Ruhd Rodriguez, Peter Amores, and Kharl de Jesus.

Last year’s Sagay Open runner-up and reigning UAAP men’s football champion Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles salvaged the third place with a 3-1 win over Villa Angela FC./PN
