ILOILO City – University of San Agustin (USA) moved closer to taking the 2017 Iloilo City Invitational Basketball League (Mayor’s Cup – 1st Conference) college category crown with a 94-91 win over Central Philippine University (CPU) Golden Lions.
John Rey Madulim led the way with 23 points for USA, which can capture the championship with a repeat victory in Game 2 of the best-of-three series.
Holding to a slim 30-27 lead at the end of the opening period on Monday night, USA began to pull away in the second frame as it hanged on to a 51-44 halftime lead before widening it to 73-63 after the first 30 minutes.
CPU made its move in the final quarter and managed to rally to as close as 92-91. USA’s John Angelo Robejes then drained two free throws to extend the lead to 94-91 before CPU misfired on its final attempt.
Game 2 was scheduled Tuesday night at the Barangay Katilingban gym in Molo district.
Meanwhile St. Roberts International Academy bagged the third-place trophy in the high school category after scoring a come-from-behind 81-77 win over Sun Yat Sen High School.
Down by as much as 16 points in the third quarter, St. Roberts leaned on Roy Jacinto, who top-scored with 17 points, to trim the deficit to 10 points heading into the fourth.
St. Roberts continued its uprising in the fourth and was able to come to within 77-75 with over a minute left before Jacinto uncorked two straight triples to give the team an 81-77 lead.
For college and 40-up categories, first prize is P5,000 cash, while second and third prizes are P3,000 and P2,000, respectively. The high school champion, on the other hand, gets P10,000, while the second and third placers will have P8,000 and P5,000, respectively.
