San Beda smothers San Sebastian, goes 13-0 in NCAA

MANILA – San Beda University Red Lions inched closer on another Final Four stint after a 91-76 win over San Sebastian College Stags in the NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball at the San Juan Arena.

James Canlas top-scored with 20 points on Tuesday while Donald Tankoua and Calvin Oftana added 18 and 15 markers, respectively.

The defending champions Red Lions improved to 13-0 slate.

“I salute the players. We were having problems in the first three games in the second round but I’m happy how they responded. They showed what they are capable of,” said Red Lions head coach Boyet Fernandez.

The Red Lions set the tone early with Oftana and Canlas anchoring the offense in the opening period before the latter took charge in the second frame. They surged to a 35-17 edge.

The onslaught continued for the Red Lions against the Final Four contender Stags with Tankoua, Oftana and Evan Nelle taking charge in the second half to maintain their unbeaten slate.

RK Ilagan had 16 points, Allyn Bulanadi added 14 points while Rommel Calahat tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Stags dropped to 7-5 win-loss record.

In the second game, Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights nailed its second straight win by beating College of St. Benilde Blazers, 87-74.

Ato Ular top-scored with 20 points, while Fran Yu added 19 markers as the Knights improved to 9-4./PN
