BACOLOD City — Authorities have confirmed that the bomb threat reported in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on July 11 was a deliberate hoax, prompting an ongoing investigation to identify those responsible and file appropriate criminal charges.
In a statement issued Sunday, July 12, the San Carlos City Police Station, together with the Philippine Coast Guard Substation–San Carlos, said a comprehensive inspection and assessment found no explosive device or actual threat, confirming that the report was fabricated to sow fear and disrupt normal activities in the city.
San Carlos City Mayor Renato Y. Gustilo appealed to residents to assist authorities in identifying the individual or group behind the false bomb threat by providing any information or evidence that could help the investigation.
“As a peaceful community, I appeal to everyone to help our local authorities identify the perpetrator and gather evidence so that appropriate legal action can be taken,” Gustilo said.
The mayor assured the public that the city government and law enforcement agencies would utilize all available resources, including digital tracing, to identify those responsible and ensure they face appropriate criminal charges.
Authorities said the hoax compromised public safety, caused unnecessary panic, disrupted essential services, and disturbed peace and order in the city.
The investigation is focused on determining the identity of the suspect and the motive behind the false report.
Gustilo also urged residents to exercise caution and responsibility in using social media, emphasizing the need to verify information before sharing it online.
“Sharing unverified, inaccurate, or unsubstantiated content causes stress and creates a harmful environment,” the mayor said. “Every action we take online shapes how our community is seen, and we must all act with care and integrity.”
He warned that the spread of misinformation can heighten public anxiety, damage the city’s digital reputation, and undermine public trust.
