ILOILO City – Police arrested yesterday a barangay kagawad possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in San Dionisio, Iloilo.

Bagacay village councilman Jorge Dato-on, 67, was detained in the custodial facility of the municipal police station.

Officers raided the house at around 11 a.m. They recovered a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition for a .45 pistol, a Garand rifle and a .38 revolver.

“He (Dato-on) did not resist and voluntarily turned over the firearm and ammunition,” said Chief Inspector Jonathan Pinuela, intelligence chief of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.

Dato-on’s house was a repository of firearms and ammunition that local politicians used, especially during the 2016 elections, police sources said.

Dira sang mga politiko ginatago ang ila armas, which was why he (Dato-on) possessed ammunitions for various firearms,” said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Pinuela called on the people of the 5th District in possession of loose firearms to turn them over to the police to avoid arrest.

“This operation was in compliance with a directive from (Police Regional Office 6 director) Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag to focus on northern Iloilo in the campaign against loose firearms,” said Pinuela./PN
