KALIBO, Aklan – Participating groups in the SangKalibong Tamboe Contest will be competing with each other on Jan. 16 next year.
They will be showcasing their rhythmic drum beats for the festival revelry and for the chance to be declared champion with a cash prize worth P100,000, according to festival organizer Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi).
Groups joining the contest are the Pirates 1962, Toronian Hotshots, Was-ag, 509 Society, Aeang-Aeang, Bantod Smile, SNV Chickboys, Ninolitos, 3 J’s Marino, Road Side, Akatski, Blue Birds, Lagalag 27 Original, Delex 300, D’ Neighborhood, Adamas, D’Emagine, Aklanon Troopers, and Vigilants Kalibo.
The “sadsad,” or street dancing, will be from Mabini Street to this capital’s downtown area. It will start at 1 p.m. before the groups perform at Pastrana Park, Kasafi chairman Albert Menez said.
Each group with at least 40 members must perform with their drums and lyres – with no choreographed dancing – for 10 minutes at the final judging area.
Menez said ensemble instruments like empty gasoline drums, plastic PVC pipes, containers, and pails are not allowed.
The participating groups are also required to play old songs like “Roll Out the Barrel” and “Happy Days are Here Again,” among others.
Menez added that a disco lights party on the streets surrounding Pastrana Park will cap the SangKalibong Tamboe Contest, which is one of the side events of the 2018 Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival scheduled on Jan. 12 to 21. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
