ILOILO City – Sara Warriors captured the 1st Province of Iloilo Sports Developmental League U-18 basketball crown when it defeated Barotac Nuevo, 90-84, in the championship game at the Pototan Astrodome.
Jeson dela Cruz led the way with 24 points, including some clutch baskets in the end, for Sara Warriors. Tournament MVP Ralph Bajon finished with 30 markers for Barotac Nuevo.
Unlike in the elimination round, the gold medal game on Sunday was tight for both teams in the first three quarters until Sara Warriors had a separation late in the game on consecutive points by Dela Cruz.
Sara Warriors advanced to the championship match after a dominant win over Leganes, while Barotac Nuevo beat Miag-ao, 80-73, in the other semifinals match.
Meanwhile Alimodian Warbles bagged the U-13 basketball championship after a 67-41 victory over Pototan. Deshawn Alamodian once again spearheaded the attack of Warbles with 14 points.
Fifteen towns were participating in the two-week sporting event.
Aside from basketball, other sports events in the tournament were volleyball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, football, and chess.
The Developmental League “has culminated but will never end,” said Dr. Raymundo Lapating, executive director of the provincial government’s Center for Sports and Physical Fitness. “In fact, we are just starting.”/PN
