MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio said she harbors no personal resentment toward President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., even as political tensions between their camps continue to escalate following the collapse of their 2022 “UniTeam” alliance.
Responding to the President’s recent remarks that he remains open to reconciling with the Dutertes, Duterte-Carpio clarified she is not taking the political fallout personally.
“I have no ill feelings with him with regard to the political persecution that I am receiving from the administration because that is part of the life of a politician,” she said.
However, the Vice President did not hold back in criticizing Marcos’ leadership and what she described as breaches of the country’s laws and sovereignty.
“I have problems with his performance as president and I have problems with the violations of our fundamental law, our Constitution, particularly with the rendition of former president (Rodrigo) Duterte. That was really an affront to Philippine sovereignty,” she said.
“He gives conflicting statements, truly. The very first day of this administration. In fact, he has not followed through with any of his campaign promises,” Duterte-Carpio added.
The Marcos-Duterte tandem captured a historic electoral victory in 2022, with Marcos garnering over 31 million votes and Duterte-Carpio securing more than 32 million. But cracks in the alliance began to surface in 2023, culminating in an impeachment complaint filed by the House of Representatives against the Vice President./PN
