ILOILO – In a written statement, concerned citizens calling themselves “Promoters of Peace” wanted the public to know they were happy that at long last, Roberto Del Castillo of Barangay Devera, Sara, Iloilo has been arrested for illegal possession of firearms.

“The suspect should not be allowed to avail himself of bail for his temporary liberty because we fear that his presence in the community will be dangerous for us,” part of the statement read.

Policemen raided the 68-year-old Del Castillo’s house on Jan. 30 and recovered two 12-gauge shotguns, a .22 rifle and a .45 pistol. He was immediately arrested.

Assorted bullets were also seized from the suspect’s house.

“(R)esidents of (B)arangay (Devera) have been constantly in the grip of fear,” read part of  the group’s statement, because Del Castillo would allegedly threaten anybody who “opposed his moves and unlawful activities.”

On Feb. 1, Del Castillo was charged with violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

According to police sources, they were investigating further the suspect for possible links to gun-for-hire groups and even drug trafficking.

The “Promoters of Peace” said allowing Del Castillo to post bail would be inimical to the peace and order of Sara and “other places in the province of Iloilo.”

“Before the Del Castillo’s arrest, we were always living insecure, afraid that somebody would harass and threaten us. In fact, we complained to authorities. Now that he has been arrested we feel safe,” a source in Barangay Devera told Panay News.

Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, police provincial director, has ordered his men to go all out against all kinds of criminal elements, including protectors and pushers of illegal drugs, in the 4th and 5th districts of Iloilo.

Sara town in the 5th District has an unsavory reputation of being a “safe house of criminal elements.”

“If there are more than three different kind of guns recovered, no bail for the offense charged,” said Police Officer 2 Francis John Aricaya, Sara police station investigator.

Del Castillo failed to present gun licenses and the only one he had for the .45 pistol was already expired./PN
