ILOILO City – More than 600 campus journalists and school paper advisers from the Schools Division of Iloilo gathered for a two-day journalism seminar-workshop aimed at improving their skills in modern content creation and publication design at the Iloilo Grand Hotel from August 30 to 31.
The training, titled “Fonts and Layouts: The Reborn,” was organized by the Division of Iloilo Association of School Paper Advisers, Trainers and Campus Journalists Inc. (DIASPATCJI) in partnership with the Regional Association of School Paper Advisers Inc. (RASPAI). The event sought to equip participants with updated knowledge and techniques that would enhance both the visual presentation and quality of content in school publications.
The workshop was facilitated by the Division Trainers group led by Ma’am Lilibeth E. Larupay, Division Learning Resource (LR) Supervisor and Division In-Charge of Journalism for the Elementary Level. Through hands-on activities and practical exercises, participants were able to apply the concepts and skills discussed during the sessions.
Adding value to the training were renowned journalism experts from the WordCup by the Calapit Team. Veteran media practitioners and training directors Eugenio “Sonny” Calapit and Ana Marie Calapit shared their expertise in news design, graphics creation, page layout, and effective storytelling. Their sessions provided participants with insights into producing engaging and professional-looking publications.
One of the highlights of the seminar was the keynote address delivered by Dr. Ruby Therese P. Almencion, Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent. In her message, she emphasized the importance of truth and integrity in journalism. She encouraged young journalists to create a meaningful legacy by producing honest, responsible, and impactful stories that inform and inspire their school communities.
The event also received strong support from education leaders. Dr. Eugenio Mallorca and Dr. Nestor Paul M. Pingil of the Schools Division Office attended the activity and motivated participants to continue developing their journalistic skills. Meanwhile, Dr. Shannon Khey A. Amoyan, representing the Department of Education Regional Office, highlighted the significant role of campus journalism in promoting critical thinking, responsible communication, and active community involvement.
Through the seminar-workshop, the Schools Division of Iloilo reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing competent and ethical campus journalists who can contribute to the continued growth and excellence of school publications./PN
