ILOILO City – Sea trips from Iloilo to Negros Occidental and Mindanao were cancelled yesterday due to tropical depression “Auring.”
The state weather bureau raised storm signal No. 1 over southern Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Island, and Cebu, among others.
Trips to Negros Occidental via Estancia, Dumangas (Iloilo province) and Lapuz ports (Iloilo City), and to Bacolod City, Palawan and Mindanao were affected by the cancellation.
No sea vessel of any tonnage shall be allowed to sail, except to take shelter, when signal No. 1 or higher is hoisted within its point of origin, the intended route and point of destination, said Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica of the Philippine Coast Guard – Iloilo in a radio interview.
Palabrica said the coastguard was coordinating with shipping agencies on how to assist the affected passengers. He called on the passengers to cooperate for their safety and that of the vessels’ crews.
Pump boats plying Iloilo City-Guimaras and vice versa were exempted since they were operating in a “special area,” said Palabrica.
But they should take in only 75 percent of their full passenger capacity, he stressed.
“Kon makita naton nga dalagko na gid ang balod diri sa Guimaras and Iloilo straits, pwede man naton i-cancel (ang boat trips) any time,” he told Panay News.
“Auring” is expected to make landfall on Surigao del Sur between Sunday and Monday evening, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Placed under signal No. 1 were Cuyo Island, Bohol, Siquijor, Negros provinces, southern Leyte, Cebu, Guimaras, southern Iloilo, southern Antique, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte including Siargao Island, Dinagat province, Misamis Oriental, and Camiguin.
