ILOILO City – He may be a critic of Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog but Councilor Plaridel Nava can collaborate with the city’s chief executive, too. But he wants it imbued with transparency.
Nava proposed an ordinance institutionalizing the “Dungog sang Iloilo” awards.
Mabilog conceptualized the awards given every Charter Day celebration of the city.
In proposing to institutionalize the awards, Nava noted that “the manner and method of choosing the awardees is always left to the discretion of the executive with no criteria, qualifications and requirements published to the public.”
The councilor said his proposed ordinance will ensure the awards’ transparency. It mandates the establishment of mechanisms (criteria, qualifications of nominees, etc.) in the selection process.
The “Dungog sang Iloilo” is the city government’s way of officially recognizing exemplary Ilonggos who have contributed to the city’s development.
Nava’s proposed ordinance was referred to Sangguniang Panlungsod’s committee on tourism, culture and historical affairs.
Nava and fellow opposition councilor Joshua Alim said after winning in the May 9 elections, “We will be critical collaborators. We will cooperate sa administration kun sa kauswagan sang banwa,” Alim told Panay News.
They won’t be “obstructionists” in the city council for no reason at all, they said but vowed to continue taking on the role of “fiscalizers.”
