MANILA – Bacolodnon Genesis Servania fell short in his first world title clash after a unanimous-decision loss to WBO world featherweight champion Oscar Valdez 116-110, 119-111, 117-109 in Tucson, Arizona on Friday night (Saturday in Manila).
Servania struggled early in the match, with Valdez landing multiple combinations and rights to the body. He wobbled in the third round after Valdez landed a huge left hook and another straight to the body.
The Filipino may have had his moments in the fourth round – he once floored Valdez with a straight right hand – but the Mexican responded with a knockdown in the fifth round.
Since then it was a tight exchange but Valdez still got the upper hand with his body shots. Servania tried to score a late knockout but Valdez became evasive as the bout ended.
Servania, 29, suffered his first defeat and slid to a 29-1-0 win-loss-draw record, with 12 knockout wins, while Valdez improved his unblemished slate to 23-0-0, including 19 stoppage victories.
DONAIRE GUNS FOR WBC BELT
Today, four-division world boxing champion Nonito Donaire will aim for the vacant WBC Silver featherweight title when he faces Mexican Ruben Garcia Hernandez in San Antonio, Texas.
This will be Donaire’s first boxing match following his controversial defeat to Jessie Magdaleno in November 2016 in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Jessie Vargas clash.
A native of Talibon, Bohol, Donaire said he is taking his match against Hernandez seriously in hopes of having a shot at regaining the world featherweight championship.
“I’m ready to return to the ring and show that I still have what it takes to be a world champion and face the best in this sport,” said Donaire, who signed a contract with Ringstar Sports after Top Rank Promotions released him.
Donaire has a 37-4-0 record, including 24 knockout wins, while Hernandez has 22-2-1, including nine stoppage victories./PN
