MANILA – Sen. Risa Hontiveros on Friday regarded as “the lowest of the low” the reopening of the House investigation into the New Bilibid drug trade.
Hontiveros said the probe meant to “humiliate” Sen. Leila de Lima’s past relationship with her former bodyguard and driver Ronnie Dayan.
Dayan, also the alleged “bagman” of de Lima, appeared before the House of Representatives on Thursday to answer the allegations against him.
“It was not an investigation in aid of legislation. It was a public lynching in aid of misogyny and sexism,” Hontiveros said.
“The intention was clear. Members of the committee were grossly unparliamentary. Their derogatory line of questioning did not aim to shed light on the issue of the drug trade in our prisons.”
In a previous investigation, several Bilibid inmates linked to illegal drugs claimed that they helped fund the senatorial bid of the former secretary of the justice department.
Regarding the show cause order issued to de Lima, Hontiveros urged congressman investigating the illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison to “observe and respect the principles of co-equality and inter-chamber courtesy.”
Both Houses of Congress, the lady senator said, must first conclude their respective inquiries on the issue.
The House justice committee on Wednesday issued the show-cause order against de Lima after she allegedly prevented Dayan from testifying in the probe.
“If they are confident that they have real and tangible evidence against Senator De Lima, then let the evidence speak for itself. That is the only way for the Lower House to recover from this plunge into new and unparalleled lows,” Hontiveros ended./PN
