ILOILO City – A 48-year-old carpenter denied owning the suspected shabu that Mandurriao district police officers seized from him.

“They were planted,” insisted Jose Maria Hinojales of Barangay Q. Abeto, Mandurriao.

Hinojales was arrested in a buy-bust operation on Mirasol Street, Barangay Q. Abeto at around 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday. He yielded six sachets of suspected shabu, police said.

He admitted snorting drugs before but “I stopped when President [Rodrigo] Duterte started the war on drugs.”

According to Hinojales, he and his family had just finished dinner when police officers barged into their house.

Officers kept an eye on Hinojales during the time they were barred from actively holding antidrug operations, said Chief Inspector Juvy Navales, Mandurriao police chief.

At the time, “gahatag kami intelligence report sa PDEA (Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Region) 6,” Navales said.

Hinojales, a “street value target,” surrendered during the early days of Oplan Double Barrel but eventually fled, depriving the authorities of his vital data, the police official said.

On Wednesday Hinojales sold a plastic pack of suspected shabu to a poseur-buyer for P500, a police report showed.

Five more sachets of the same substance were seized from him. All the seized substance were valued at P30,000, police said.

Hinojales was detained at the Mandurriao police station. He was facing charges for violation of sections 5 and 11 of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002./PN
