GUIMARAS – Two siblings died of suffocation inside a 54-meter-deep well in Sitio Sirom, Barangay San Nicolas, Buenavista, around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23.
According to Police Captain Rene Mercado, chief of the Buenavista Municipal Police Station, a 10-year-old boy, identified only by his alias “Bugoy,” was asked by the well owner to clean it due to a foul smell reportedly caused by a dead toad.
After the water was drawn from the well, the boy descended into it. However, he became unresponsive while at the bottom. Alarmed, the well owner sought help from the victim’s 26-year-old brother, alias “Dagul.”
Dagul immediately went down to check on his brother. However, upon reaching halfway, he reportedly gasped that he couldn’t breathe and subsequently slipped and fell deeper into the well.
A rope was thrown in to try and pull Dagul out, but he was unresponsive and unable to climb back up.
Rescue teams were called to the scene, and by around 4:25 p.m., they recovered Dagul’s body, followed by Bugoy’s body at 4:37 p.m. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
