ILOILO City – Contenders in the Sinamba sa Regatta left the audience in awe with their “well-polished” and “competitive” choreography in yesterday’s opening salvo for the music-and-dance competition of the Iloilo Paraw Regatta.

The event at the Festive Walk of the Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao district was one of the activities ushering in the annual boat-racing festivity now on its 46th year.

It gave a glimpse of what is in store for spectators during the main competition on Feb. 16 at the Iloilo Esplanade.

Sinamba sa Regatta “disappeared” for two consecutive Paraw Regatta celebrations but the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation, Inc. managed to revive it with the help of the local government and sponsors, said Chairman Ronald Raymond Sebastian.

The six competing groups are:

* Grupo Versantinos of DBND Production, with Ian Christopher F. Bordon, John Paul de la Cruz and Matthew Balbastro as choreographers

* Grupo na Sidlangan (Sidlangan Dance Studio) – Linane C. Soncio

* El Via Bayle (Pavia National High School) – Andrew Jalbuna

* Groupo Fuerte Baile (Fort San Pedro National High School) – Crisanto Sorsano

* Ritmo Ilonggo de Bailar (The Artistic Team Tag) – Errol Jave Villalobos

* Igbantog Bailarines de la Isla (Igbantog Performing Arts of Nueva Valencia National High School, Guimaras) – Beniel Frank Aspero

Each of them performed for about two minutes before gathering for a collective show.

“Polished gid tanan nila nga hulag,” said one of the opening salvo spectators, 21-year-old Julius Bartolome of Barangay Loboc, Lapuz district.

For Bartolome, the performance of Ritmo Ilonggo de Bailar stood out.

He praised their “unique dance movements” and “eye-catching” costumes.

But witnessing such an event for the first time, Bartolome said he liked the performances overall.

The 28-year-old Sheena Marie Parreño, another resident of Lapuz district, was similarly overwhelmed.

Parreñon was unable to remember which group performed better than the others but said all the routines were worthy of applause.

Ginpagwa gid nila tanan ang ila nga abilidad,” she said.

Like Bartolome, Parreño was seeing the Sinamba sa Regatta opening salvo for the first time.

Kanami gid ya sang tanan. The way they dance, the way they groove sa music, makita mo gid nga wala may mapa-pierde,” she said.

In an earlier interview, Rachel Manero, one of those in charge of the festival’s publicity, said they were unable to stage Sinamba sa Regatta for two years due to “limited resources.”

While the competing groups may have as much as 35 members each, they were allowed to send only 10 representatives to yesterday’s opening salvo.

Their performances during the main competition on Feb. 16 shall jive with this year’s Iloilo Paraw Regatta theme “Unity Amidst the Waves of Change.”/PN
