CEBU City – Garbage left by Sinulog revelers have reduced by 45 tons, according to the city government’s Department of Public Services (DPS).
Only 155 tons were recorded this year compared to the 200 tons last year.
DPS assistant head John Paul Gelasque said they usually gather some 200 tons of garbage after every Sinulog celebration.
Street sweepers started clearing the parade route of garbage immediately after the Sinulog grand parade from 5 p.m. on Sunday until 6 a.m. on Monday.
The DPS finished cleaning the streets before heavy rains fell on Monday and caused flooding in some parts of the city and other areas in Cebu.
The heavy rains prompted Gov. Hilario Davide III to suspend classes in public elementary and high schools all over Cebu.
Empty plastic water bottles and food containers composed most of the garbage left by some 2 million revelers, the DPS said.
Most of the garbage were collected in urban areas, like near the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, the city hall, Colon Street, Legaspi Street, Fuente Osmeña Circle, Mango Avenue, and the Baseline area, Gelasque said. (PNA)
