Sky Cable-Iloilo nips Letran in Gov’s Cup

SKY CABLE-ILOILO is still unbeaten in the Iloilo Governor’s Cup National Invitational Basketball Championships after a 91-85 win over Letran Knights at the covered gym in Passi City, Iloilo.

Negrense Mark Yee top-scored with 26 points for Sky Cable-Iloilo (2-0). Cameroonian import Rodrigue Ebondo added 15 points while Willie Miller and Leomar Losentes had 14 and 13, respectively.

From a nip-and-tuck battle in the first three quarters on Friday, Sky Cable-Iloilo gained headways early in the fourth quarter with conversions from Ebondo, Miller, Felix Apreku, and Losentes.

Knights tried to make a run on consecutive conversions from Ilonggo guard John Paul Calvo but free throws from Yee, Ebondo and Rudy Lingganay sealed the victory for Sky Cable-Iloilo.

Mapua University Cardinals (1-1) put itself in contention for the finals after a 91-86 victory over Centro Escolar University Scorpions (0-2).

Warren Bonifacio top-scored with 18 points, Erick Jabel added 13 markers, while Christian Bunag and Noah Lugo had 10 points each for Cardinals, which bounced back from a 74-91 loss to Knights.

Cardinals surged to an early advantage and was up 24-8 but Scorpions slowly clawed its way back to take a 57-56 lead in the third period. Bonifacio and Jabel came up with conversions in the fourth to clinch the win for Cardinals.

The top two finishers at the end of the elimination round Saturday will face off in a championship game at 5:30 p.m. today while the third and fourth will fight for the bronze at 3 p.m. at the Pototan Astrodome./PN
