MANILA – With PBA lifting the limit on the number of its players that Gilas Pilipinas can call up, Gregory Slaughter is eager to form a “triple tower” with fellow bigs June Mar Fajardo and Japeth Aguilar in the national men’s basketball team.
In an interview following Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings’ 103-77 win over Kia Picanto on Wednesday, Slaughter said he is excited to once again be called up to play for the national team soon.
“The lifting of the limit is good news,” Slaughter said. “I’ve always been looking forward to my chance to play in the national team again. I know they got one coming up real soon but hopefully I’ll be able to join Gilas again.”
“You know, me and Japeth, we’ve been playing on Gilas since the first one,” he added. “It would be nice to play with him again, along with June Mar and a lot of the other guys now. So I’m looking forward to it and I hope I get that call again.”
Aside from Slaughter, San Miguel Beermen’s three-point gunner Marcio Lassiter is also hoping to be given another chance to represent the country in international basketball competitions.
“We’ll see,” Lassiter said. “Now it’s just day-by-day, take it game-by-game. When it comes, it comes. I just try to keep myself healthy. That’s the most important thing.”
Slaughter and Lassiter are no stranger to being called up for the national team. They were part of the original Gilas Pilipinas squad that was handled by Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman.
Both players, however, were affected by PBA’s “one player per team” policy with Gilas head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes choosing Fajardo and Aguilar from Beermen and Kings, respectively./PN
