ILOILO City – Soldiers of the Philippine Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion (12IB) discovered an M16 assault rifle and assorted war materiel following an encounter between the government forces and alleged rebels on Monday, November 18, in Barangay Batobato, Tapaz, Capiz.
The 12IB troops responded to an information from civilians regarding the presence of three armed men, according to Lieutenant Colonel Vicel Jan Garsuta of 12IB.
Garsuta said the five-minute gun battle started at around 5:50 p.m. when the government troops encountered three alleged terrorists believed to be members of the joint elements of the Regional Sentro De Grabidad (RSDG) and the dismantled Central Front – Komiteng Rehiyon Panay.
“The rebels withdrew after five minutes of firefight,” he added.
The leadership of the 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division (3ID) lauded the 12IB for its efforts in finding, fixing, and finishing remnants of the New People’s Army (NPA) in its area of operations, including Tapaz town.
“A Stable Internal Peace and Security environment in Panay Island is within our reach. Our troops are persistently pursuing remnants of the communist terrorist group to prevent the group from resurging. With the unwavering support of the people of Panay, we will not allow this terrorist group to gain any ground or rise up again. We will ensure their complete defeat,” said Major General Marion Sison, commander of the 3ID.
Sison renewed his call to the remaining NPAs, urging them to abandon their dying armed struggle and return to the fold of the law.
He emphasized that true peace and a fulfilling life await them with their families, communities, and government, who deeply care for their well-being.
“Come forward while you still have time to rebuild your lives. We want you to experience a harmonious and productive life, surrounded by the love and support of your loved ones and community. Together, let’s embark on a journey towards a peaceful and progressive Panay and Visayan region,” Sison added./PN
