MANILA – At least two lawmakers have lauded the signing of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) 10868 or the Centenarians Act of 2016.
President Rodrigo Duterte signed recently the IRR for the Centenarians Law, granting Filipinos, living here and abroad, who reach 100 years old and above a cash gift amounting to P100,000.
RA 10868 also provides the beneficiaries a letter of felicitation from the President.
“We honor these people for their longevity – a testament to leading a life with care for self and therefore others – so I hope that benefits due them are not long in coming,” said Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara, co-sponsor of the Senate version of the bill.
Angara said the government should not delay the provision of the cash gift “because benefits are not meant to be posthumous, and gratitude is always about ‘the now’.”
For her part, Sen. Nancy Binay, sponsor of the bill, commended the Duterte administration for the immediate implementation of the law.
The senator said the law does not only recognize the value of reaching the age of 100, but also praise their sacrifices and contributions to society.
“The measure showcased the Filipinos’ close-knit family culture wherein the elderly were taken cared and provided for. Ito poangisasamganapakahalaga, napakaganda at kakaibangkatangiannatingmga Pilipino,” she added.
