ILOILO City – Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso asked the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) to hold an executive session on the illegal drug problem.
During a city council inquiry yesterday, the Iloilo City Police Office director refused to categorically answer whether or not three barangay captains were involved in the drug trade.
“May mga detalye kasi na hindi pwede sabihin sa lahat kasi [they] would preempt operations (against identified drug personalities),” said Canieso.
Councilors were looking into possible administrative liabilities against three barangay captains for the alleged proliferation of drugs in their villages.
Subjects of the inquiry were Keith Espinosa of Monica-Blumentritt, City Proper; Remia Prevendido Gregori of Bakhaw, Mandurriao; and Noemi Jablo of Desamparados, Jaro.
The committee on police, fire, penology, public safety, order and security, and dangerous drugs and rehabilitation — led by Councilor Jeffrey Ganzon as chairman — was leading the investigation.
But the barangay captains were not yet invited. The committee said they were still gathering more information.
Councilor Plaridel Nava, who sought the investigation, asked Canieso if Espinosa, Gregori and Jablo were involved in the drug trade.
Canieso refused to answer and asked for an executive session, Nava said.
“But I asked him (Canieso) to confirm if Jesus ‘Jing-jing’ Espinosa Jr. and Richard Prevendido were considered drug personalities, and he confirmed it,” said Nava.
“At least [it’s] official, because as far as the city council is concerned, we have not yet acquired that information,” he said.
The committee granted Canieso’s request for an executive session but has not yet decided when to hold it.
Another inquiry will be held on Nov. 3, Nava said.
“I will just wait whether or not they will invite the three barangay captains,” he said. “If they appear, I will ask questions.”/PN
