ILOILO City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) approved an ordinance institutionalizing Feb. 15 of each year as “Mass Media Day” in this city.

This aims to promote consciousness among Ilonggos about the role of mass media in nation-building, said Councilor Lady Julie Grace Baronda, author of ordinance.

Various media organizations, representatives of different schools offering the Mass Communication course, National Telecommunications Commission, National Union of Journalists in the Philippines – Iloilo, among others, agreed to set such date.

“The Mass Media Day will be declared a public working holiday to guarantee the involvement of various sectors in Iloilo City. There is a need for the city government and residents to recognize the efforts of media in upholding freedom of speech, expression and the press,” said Baronda.

Media play a vital role in promoting free expression and press freedom and also a channel of information between the government and the people, she added.

During the Mass Media Day, there will be an exhibit. Exemplary members of media will be also honored.

Different student-based media organizations in the city will be made to participate through forums, symposiums or other events.

Under the ordinance, a mass media day committee will be created that will be in-charge of formulating and facilitating activities showcasing the importance of media in the practice of free expression and press freedom.

Other roles include:

*organize events that highlight the different types and functions of mass media

*deliberate on how mass media may continually promote free speech and free expression for continuation of liberty in public and truthful discussion about any matter of public interest without fear of censorship or subsequent punishment

*involve different sectors of society including government agencies, non-government organizations and people’s organizations, and business sectors to be actively involved in celebration

*encourage unification among mass media practitioners in the city

*craft rules and guidelines for the selection of past and present mass media practitioners to be honored during the celebration

* plan on topics to be included in forums and symposiums to be discussed in educational and all other institutions

* ensure the continuing education among media practitioners and society in general on matters concerning mass media, including matters about responsible journalism, and

* foster continuous development of mass media practitioners in the city. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
