ILOILO City – A 32-year-old man from Barangay Miraga-Gibuangan, Santa Barbara, Iloilo faces homicide and frustrated homicide charges.
Police said Romy Casipong, now detained at the municipal police station, hacked to death farmer Ambrosio Surmieda on Wednesday night.
Surmieda’s son Rolly survived the hacking but was taken to the Western Visayas Sanitarium.
The hacking happened around 9 p.m. while the three were on a drinking binge, said Chief Inspector Rogelio Ortigas, Santa Barbara police chief.
A heated argument ensued between the elder Surmieda and Casipong, said Ortigas.
From what the police gathered, Surmieda tried to shot Casipong with a 12-gauge shotgun but the suspect overpowered the farmer during a grappling for the gun.
“Instead of shooting Surmieda, however, the suspect chose to hack him and the farmer’s son,” said Ortigas.
Romy surrendered to the police afterwards./PN
