MANILA – Ilonggo Jesus Melliza made the go-ahead goal for Stallion-Laguna to defeat – again – JP Voltes-Marikina 2-1 in the Philippines Football League at the football stadium in Biñan, Laguna.
With scores tied at 1, the La Paz, Iloilo City native Melliza broke away from the defense of JP Voltes to score the marginal goal.
Sunday night’s victory was a fitting follow-up to Stallion’s 2-0 victory over JP Voltes last Wednesday behind two goals also from Melliza, a former standout of Far Eastern University Tamaraws.
JP Voltes actually gained the early lead on the first-half goal by Takashi Odawara but Stallion caught up early in the second half courtesy of Gabrielle Mascazzini.
With the victory, Stallion moved up to seventh place in the standings with 10 points on 2 wins, 4 draws and 7 losses, while JP Voltes dropped to fifth with 18 points on 6 wins and 6 losses.
Meanwhile, Jordan Mintah scored the game-winning goal as Kaya-Makati escaped with a 2-1 victory over Ilocos United at the University of Makati Stadium.
Kaya immediately surged ahead after a conversion from Robert Lopez-Mendy this was quickly equalized by Ilocos United on a penalty kick by John Kanayama.
Kaya seized the solo first place with 26 points – 8 wins, 2 draws, 3 losses – while Ilocos United remains at the tail-end with 3 points./PN
