Street volleyball in Guimaras

GUIMARAS recently launched street volleyball, a deviation from the usual volleyball known to many, with a one-day tournament at the Salvacion Elementary School in Buenavista town.

Emerging as winners in the men’s category were Loyalty squad with Black Phoenix and Hot Cuts taking the runner-up honors.

Ball Busters ruled the women’s category with Supang National High Schools Seniors and Plok-Plok finishing runners-up.

The winner of street volleyball tournament, which was initiated by Gov. Samuel Gumarin, received medals and cash prizes.

Tournament organizer Richard Gabayoyo told the Buzzer Beater that the launching of the street volleyball was a success. Over 100 players participated.

The one-day event was held in four courts of Salvacion.

Street volleyball, Gabayoyo explained, is a game designed as a 3-on-3 volleyball match where the first team to reach 21 points will be the winner. Each team has a maximum of five players in the roster.

“It is a mini volleyball game that enhances the speed, power, agility, cardiovascular endurance, and mental toughness of the players,” Gabayoyo said. “This game can be played either indoor or outdoor court.”

“As proponent and author of the rule book on street volleyball, I am delighted that it turned out to be a successful launching. For sure this will not be the last of this kind of events,” he added.

More importantly, the tournament also served as a charity for the crew and porters of motorbancas whose jobs were affected by the recent accident in the Iloilo Strait.

“We have received cash donations, canned goods and food packs from the participants. We turned it over to the provincial government of Guimaras including the P200 entry fees of the participants,” Gabayoyo said.

“In our own little way we wanted to help the porters and crew of Guimaras motorbancas who were heavily affected by the stoppage of operations of following the unfortunate incident,” he added.

Central Philippine University Golden Lions and Western Institute of Technology are set to face each other in the finals of the 82nd Charter Day Basketball tournament tonight in Jaro Gym.

The Golden Lions did not waste their twice-to-beat incentive in the semifinals round after finishing off the Iloilo Doctor’s College in just one game earlier this week.

The WIT, on the other hand, clinched the last finals seat on Thursday evening as it defeated the University of San Agustin. The San Ag was able to force a do-or-die game after beating WIT last Tuesday./PN
