Guimaras’ Gonzaga, Army stun Choco Mucho in Premier V-League

MANILA – PacificTown – Army Lady Troopers rallied from two sets down to score a 39-41, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-12 upset over Choco Mucho Flying Titans in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the San Juan Arena.


Guimarasnon Jovelyn Gonzaga had triple-double 24 points, 26 excellent digs and 16 excellent receptions on Wednesday.

Honey Royse Tubino and Ilongga Nerissa Bautista had 21 and 13 markers, respectively.

After losing the first two sets, the Lady Troopers gained control in the third before continuing the momentum in the fourth. It turned a 20-all score to a 25-20 win on hits by Bautista and Alina Bicar stretching the match to a fifth set.

In the decider, the Lady Troopers held a 10-6 lead but the Flying Titans managed to tie the score at 11-all.

Gonzaga and Bautista restored order for the Lady Troopers with their consecutive points.
“Sa third set, binaba namin ang tempo namin. Tayo mag-pace at mag-tempo ng game,” said Lady Troopers head coach Emilio Reyes. “Buti sa fifth set naka-recharge kami sa third and fourth.”

For the Flying Titans which dropped to 1-1 win-loss card, Kat Tolentino fired 23 points, built on 19 attacks, three blocks and an ace, while Madeleine Madayag added 15 markers.

Meanwhile, Grazielle Bombita played through leg cramps to lift BaliPure Purest Water Defenders into the win column with a 26-24, 16-25, 25-19, 17-25, 17-15 win over Philippine Air Force Jet Spikers.


Bombita exploded for 23 points to pace the Water Defenders, who arrested a two-game skid and ended a 12-game losing slump overall this season, including a win-less stint in the Reinforced Conference./PN
