MANILA — Henri Lorenzo Subido drained a go-ahead triple, propelling the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers to the finals of UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball with a 68-65 win over University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in a do-or-die semifinals at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Trailing 63-65 with 23 seconds left, Subido surged the Growling Tigers ahead, 66-65, with a three-point hit.
After a Maroons turnover, Soulemane Chabi Yo upped UST’s lead to 68-65 with two free throws.
Chabi Yo finished with double-double 22 points and 16 rebounds on Wednesday night as Subido chipped in 14 markers.
The Tigers advanced to the best-of-three finals against Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Negrense Mark Nonoy contributed 12 points, including crucial triples in the fourth period, while Rhenz Abando had 11 markers and nine rebounds for the UST.
The Tigers surged to an 18-6 start in the opening quarter but the Fighting Maroons showed some life in the second period as they cut the deficit to 28-29 at the half.
UST widened the lead to 40-33 early in the third period. UP, however, remained in striking distance before taking a 63-59 edge in the fourth. This was negated, though, by baskets from UST’s Crispin Cansino, Abando and Subido for a 66-65 advantage.
Bright Akhuetie finished with double-double 16 points and 17 rebounds as the Maroons failed to take advantage of its twice-to-beat edge to bow out of contention./PN
