BACOLOD City – An initial appropriation of P1.4 billion will be given to the sugarcane industry next year.
According to Negros Occidental 3rd District representative Alfredo Benitez, the industry has an original allocation of P2 billion in 2017.
Benitez, who authored the Republic Act 10659, or the Sugarcane Industry Development Act, however, explained that the amount is short by P600 million. Thus, he made a “gentleman’s agreement” with the Department of Budget and Management, providing that the lacking amount will be added in the 2018 budget.
The Sugarcane Industry Development Act seeks to “improve the country’s sugar industry through implementation of a productivity improvement program, farm support, research, and infrastructure support, among others.” (With a report from PNA/PN)
