ILOILO – Leon town – home to the popular summer destination Bucari – may soon be declared the Summer Capital of the province.
Sangguniang Panlalawigan Demetrio Sonza (2nd District) proposed a provincial ordinance making the tag official.
The municipality is home to Bucari, a popular summer destination.
Still under committee scrutiny, the ordinance is expected to be passed by the end of the month, said Provincial Tourism Officer Bombette Marin.
The measure will also help promote Bucari as a safe place to visit – clearing notions about its being exposed to insurgents – Marin said.
“The declaration will help the local government of Leon work better to make tourist safety a top priority” and therefore attract more tourists, she said.
It may also pave the way for more programs and projects for Bucari, including infrastructures and trainings for those engaged in tourism, said Marin.
Mayor Rolito Cajilig welcomes the proposed ordinance.
“Maayo gid (That is very good),” Cajilig said. “It gives justice to the place, which is essentially hidden by trees. People just started noticing it.”
An access road going to Bucari is now “98-percent complete,” said the mayor.
He suggested that the Provincial Tourism Office or the Department of Tourism Region 6 create a “tourism circuit” that includes Leon.
Tourism arrivals in the town from January to July this year have reached more than 7,000, Cajilig said./PN
