MANILA – Gretchel Soltones’ return to Philippine Superliga was short lived.
Supeliga slapped her with a one-year suspension and a P50,000 fine for playing in an exhibition match of a rival league.
The Iriga Lady Oragons player violated Superliga’s One League Policy for playing in a Premier Volleyball League All-Star game last month, Superliga president Ramon Suzara said yesterday.
Suzara said he had spoken with Lady Oragons team owner Medelaine Alfelor about the infraction.
“The PSL strictly enforces the One League Policy prohibiting its players from playing and/or participating in other volleyball tournaments during the one-year playing commitment with the PSL,” Suzara said.
“A violation of this policy merits both a suspension and a fine,” he added. “Soltones’ act was a clear violation of the rule. The suspension will only be lifted after one year and payment of the fine.”
Soltones played a key role during Iriga’s 15-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13 victory against Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors during their PSL debut on Oct. 24.
“While [Soltones’] absence is a huge loss, we will abide by the decision and move on,” Lady Oragons head coach Parley Tupaz said, adding that the team will try to make an appeal before the PSL.
Soltones was the third player to be slapped by the ban. Former Standard Insurance-Navy players Lilet Mabbayad and Pau Soriano were also suspended when they played for Bureau of Customs in the then Shakey’s Volleyball League./PN
