DON’T get me wrong, I love the Marvel Studios movie “Eternals”.
I love the CGI monsters called the Deviants.
I love the form-fitting lycra of our heroes.
I even like Angelina Jolie.

But what’s with all the political correctness?
The rainbow coalition.
The super inclusion?
It was becoming uncomfortable for me to watch.

Uncomfortable because it was so obvious.
So in the face.
It makes me wonder, would it make a difference in the story if it was all just male and female?
Good and evil.
Everything set in just one continent?

Let’s do the roll call of places in the movie:
Alaska, North America.
Amazon, South America.
London, Europe.
Iraq, Asia.
Australia.
India, subcontinent.

Let’s do the gender and handicap check:
Gay Phastos.
Peter Pan-ish Sprite.
Deaf Makkari.
Goth Druig.
Multiple-personality Thena.

The race and ethnicity check:
Angelina (Thena) Jolie and Richard (Ikaris) Madden, obviously white.
Kingo, Indian.
Sersi, Chinese.
Phastos, black.
Gilgamesh, Korean.
Ajak, Latina.

So yeah, I was bothered by these representations in the movie.
I didn’t feel like watching a movie.
I felt like I was in a United Nations conference.
And if I am being politically incorrect for feeling this, so be it.

So yeah, I missed “Dear Evan Hansen” on the big screen.
With COVID-19 and all, I’m not watching all the movies I wanted to see.
But also because streaming Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and all that is just so convenient and free.
I stay in my pajamas, get a bag of Cheetos, pop open a can of Coke (or uncork a bottle of wine), and I can watch as many movies as I want from my couch, or bed.

But I did see “No Time to Die” on an IMAX screen.
And I really love Daniel Craig as James Bond.
I love the action sequences.
So worth the price of admission.
And I really like the story.
And any story with a child as a soft spot or vulnerable point is always beautiful for me.
It just gets me.

This pandemic has effectively killed the big screen movie watching experience for me.
Truth be told, DVDs and streaming didn’t kill it for me last year.
I mean, I bought DVDs and I have Netflix and/or Amazon Prime subscription for years; but I still went to the movies.
I would usually go on Tuesdays, when they are cheaper with my AMC Stubs membership.
Or I would go in the morning, just before noon for $5 admission.

If I don’t ever go to a movie house again, we got the pandemic to blame.
And then, there’s the streaming platforms.
If a boyfriend is okay just cuddling in bed with a Netflix marathon, why indeed go to the cinemas?
As for my love of the operas and old movies, I already have my big collection of films on DVD.

Oh, the movies.
I have always loved movies.
I watched them.
I even made some of them.
The movies have educated me in so many ways.
Because I know how to watch them, they are as good as books to me.

So yeah, I also know how to appreciate movies for what they are.
I’m not going to be like most critics who can see nothing good in the things that they review.
I would still recommend that you watch Eternals.
If only to agree, or disagree, with my observations.

Here’s the thing:
I watched Eternals with my sister, niece, and brother-in-law.
Brother-in-law drove us to the cinemas.
Sister paid for the movie tickets.
And niece paid for the burger meals.
My contribution was giving the points for discussion after the movie.
